DENVER (AP) -- Some Colorado lawmakers are worried about the strength of the U.S. dollar -- and they want to legalize gold and silver coins as currency.
A bill pending in the state Senate would allow people to do just that.
Lawmakers don't envision people walking around with pockets full of gold coins. But they say the change is needed to protect citizens who are nervous about the American greenback and want to keep gold and silver as a backup.
Utah made the change last year. More than a dozen states are considering similar legislation.
The Colorado bill cleared a Senate committee with bipartisan support and awaits a vote from the full chamber.
