Colorado lawmakers don't finish work for the year until Wednesday. But their biggest task could be complete by the end of the day.
Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper had a Monday deadline to sign off on the state budget, including a $7.4 billion general fund plan for the fiscal year that starts in July.
The improving economy means that next year's budget includes some $100 million for a property tax break for seniors. And it's poised to be the first year in three years that K-12 schools won't see a budget cut from the state.
Because the governor could veto a spending package, lawmakers traditionally time the budget so that they have a couple days to try to override any budget vetoes while they're still in Denver.
