Optimism High For Those Saying U.S. Moving Right Way

By: Associated Press

The number of people who see America moving in the right direction is dwindling, but their optimism is fueled by the knowledge that the U.S. has made it through tough times before.

Only about 15 percent of adults in an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll say the country is on the right path. They tend to be older, conservative people who didn't go to college and who support John McCain for president.

Forty-one percent of people who see the country as being on the right track report difficulties getting ahead financially these days. That compares with 68 percent of wrong-track people.

A retired bank supervisor from Washington state counts herself among the optimistic, noting that even in tough times, "We're still living at a higher level than most other countries in the world."
