As the economy continues to struggle, family owned businesses are facing a more uncertain future, especially if valued customers choose to save instead of spend.

Things seemed normal at Marigold Cafe and Bakery on Friday.

According to owner, Elaine Chavanon, normal was the perfect word.

Chavanon says her business has been doing fine despite a shaky economy. The market hasn't seen such huge drops in the stock market in years.

Business may be good at Marigold now, but Chavanon is focused on what could be coming.

"People are still employed;still going out to eat. I'm more afraid of the months ahead," said Chavanon.

Right now, Marigold will rely on their cheaper items, like fish and chips and the good old hamburger.

"People can still go out and have a date night and eat relatively cheap," said Chavanon.

The same goes for Poor Richards in downtown Colorado Springs.

It’s a pizza joint, wine and coffee shop, toy store and bookstore all in one.

Richard Skorman owns them all. He says business is doing okay but he is concerned with the economy.

It's Skorman's toy store that's getting hit the hardest. This Christmas, he'll focus on ordering cheaper items to sell

"They're not going to be as extravagant. Stocking stuffers will be the big ticket this Christmas," said Skorman.

Seems like you guys didn't talk to the majority of other local businesses that have seen losses around 30-40 percent with the economy the way it is. There are many small businesses that have already gone out of business or are hurting badly with the economy as it is.
