There's been a spike in robberies during the last two months with 134 robberies in Colorado Springs. Cops say 42 of those cases have been solved. They don't know why the increase in crime.
So far, at least a dozen suspects have been arrested so far. Now, they’re focusing on catching two others, Demond Smith and Bashir Ingram.
"These are the most violent of crimes where they take money or property from persons or businesses," says Lt. David Whitlock with the Colorado Springs police department.
Whitlock says Smith is wanted for robbing a handful of businesses across town, including a Papa John’s off of Delmonico and Rockrimmon. “It went by pretty darn fast,” says Jason Maw. He was working the night shift at about three weeks ago.
“I was making a pizza and heard the door open and the next thing I know, I got a Smith and Wesson in my face." Maw says Smith only made away with a small amount of cash.
With 92 of the 134 robberies still unsolved, police say they’re anxious to track down the rest of the suspects. If you have any information that could lead cops to more crooks, call Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP.
The city averages about 500 to 600 robberies a year. While it may seem like a lot, we're below the average for other cities of our same size.
