A Colorado Springs man is slowly recovering in the hospital while his attacker is still on the loose. A local dentist's assistant who used her medical training to help save his life tells 11 News helping a stranger is part of her nature.

She was in the right place at the right time.

"I heard gunshots. Quite a few of them," said the woman, who is an oral surgeon’s assistant in Colorado Springs. She agreed to an interview, but wished to withhold her identity.

She is still in shock about a shooting outside the SODO Nightclub in Colorado Springs late Halloween night.

The victim, Bob Maiava, 29 was shot twice.

"I saw he was shot, he kept moaning and grabbing his chest," she said.

Before police or paramedics could arrive and close off the scene, she rushed to Maiava, checking for a pulse, listening to him struggle to stay alive.

"He took a big deep breath, and stopped breathing," she said.

This happened twice. Both times her CPR training brought him around.

"After 6 compressions, he started coughing more blood," she said.

Recently listed in serious condition, Maiava continues his recovery. Police are looking for the man they think pulled the trigger pushing a bystander to act, heroically, some say.

She told 11 News she couldn't have acted any differently.

"I hope to God if I'm ever laying on the ground that someone would do the same for me," she said.
