Kaelin Immel of Air Force women’s basketball was named the 2017-18 Mountain West Women’s Basketball Freshman Player of the Year, announced today by the conference office. Immel and teammate Emily Conroe were also named to the MW All-Freshman Team.
Immel earned Air Force’s first-ever MW FOY award. The guard is the leading freshman scorer in the conference at 14.8 points per game overall and 16.0 in MW play. Immel has scored 429 so far this season, which is an Air Force school record in the Div. I era and the all-time freshman record. Her 288 points and 16.0 ppg in MW play are both school records. The Beaverton, Ore., native has led Falcons in scoring in 18 games and has surpassed 20 points in a game six times.
Joining Immel on the MW All-Freshman team is guard Emily Conroe. Conroe was second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.2 points per game. Conroe upped her play late, ranking second on the team in MW play at 12.1 ppg. Conroe ranked second in the conference amongst freshmen in scoring. Her 325 points currently ranks third most by a freshman at Air Force.
Air Force secured its best seeding in the Mountain West since the conference moved to 11 teams in 2013. The Falcons are slated to play nine-seed Utah State on Monday, March 5, at 2 pm PT, at the MW tourney.
