10 Pack athletes selected to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

INDIANAPOLIS (May 15, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo track and field programs will be sending 10 student-athletes to the 2018 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, set for May 24-26 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Seven members of the No. 7 men's team have been selected, while three women will be competing.
Johnson C. Smith University will serve as the host of the championships at the Irwin Belk Complex. The Championships will be streamed live on www.NCAA.com each day.
The men have seven athletes representing the ThunderWolves in six different events. The 4x400m relay team will run with Dueth Vassell (Sr., Denver, Colo.), Devundrick Walker (Jr., Aurora, Colo.), Shawn Horne (Jr., Camp Casey, South Korea) and Thomas Staines (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.). Both Walker and Staines will run in the 800m race. Derrick Williams (Sr., Columbia Falls, Mont.) is also set to compete in two races, as he has qualifi ed for the 3000m steeplechase and 5000m run for the third consecutive year. Making his outdoor national championships debut is Marcelo Laguera (Jr., Chihuahua, Mexico), as he is set to race in the 10,000m run. Finally, freshman Michael Duran (Pueblo, Colo.) has qualified in the 1500m run.
The seven athletes marks a new high for the program since its return to campus just four seasons ago. Previously, the most athletes the Pack had sent to the NCAA Outdoor Championships was four.
The women's team is matching last year's total student-athletes who qualified for the Championships, as three will represent the Pack in two events. Senior Miriam Roberts (Boulder, Colo.) returns to the outdoor national meet in the 3000m steeplechase and will compete with sophomore Gillian Maness (Kalispell, Mont.), who will be making her track and field championships debut. Senior Angelique Urenda (Pueblo, Colo.) will also be closing her collegiate career at the NCAA Outdoor Championships when she competes in the pole vault.

National qualifier in the 10,000m run … Making his outdoor track and field national meet debut … Posted a 10K time of 29:46.80 at the CSU-Pueblo Spank Blasing Meet to rank No. 11 in NCAA Division II … RMAC Champion in the 5,000m race … Recorded a top 5K time of 14:18.02 at the Bryan Clay Invitational to rank 25th nationally with an NCAA provisional time.
STAINES
National qualifier in the 800m and with the 4x400m relay team … Ran to second team All-America honors at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 800m ... VASSELL
National qualifier with the 4x400m relay team … Returning to the outdoor championships after qualifying in the 400m dash in 2015 … USTFCCCA All-Region (4x400m relay) … A member of the 4x400m relay team all season long and helped guide them to a time of 3:09.72 at the Bryan Clay Invitational to rank eighth nationally … Also a member of the 4x400m relay team that won the RMAC Championship and established a new meet record … His fastest 400m dash time of 47.89 came at the Bryan Clay Invitational and was .08 seconds off an NCAA time.
WALKER
National qualifier in the 800m and with the 4x400m relay team … Will run in the 800m run for the third time at the national outdoor championships (2015 and 2016) and was a 2015 All-American (6th) … USTFCCCA All-Region (800m and 4x400m relay) … Recorded an NCAA automatic time of 1:48.59 in the 800m at the Bryan Clay Invitational, which has him ranked fourth in NCAA Division II ... WILLIAMS
National qualifier in the 3000m steeplechase and 5000m … Will compete in both races at the national championships for the third time in his career and is a two-time All-American in the steeplechase (2016 and 2017) and a 2017 All-American in the 5000m … USTFCCCA All-Region (3000m Steeplechase and 5000m) … Posted an NCAA automatic mark at the Bryan Clay Invitational, as he is sixth nationally in the 5000m with a time of 13:55.57 … His efforts in the steeplechase at the CSU-Pueblo Spank Blasing Invite has him ranked No. 8 nationally with a time of 8:56.54 … RMAC Champion in the 1500m … Reached the podium in the 5000m race with a third-place finish … NCAA provisional time of 3:47.77 in the 1500m came at the CU Invitational.
