Teen facing charges in crash that killed Springs 8th grader

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A 17-year-old is facing a long list of charges for a crash last month that killed a middle schooler.

Nicole Heitman was riding with the suspect on the night on Jan. 13 when he flipped the SUV on Powers Boulevard. Nicole was thrown from the vehicle and killed.

Two other teens were riding in the vehicle; they and the driver were injured but survived the rollover.

Springs police announced Wednesday that the driver was facing the following charges:

-Vehicular homicide
-Vehicular assault
-Reckless driving
-Restrictions for minor drivers
-Child restraint system

Vehicular homicide and vehicular assault are both felony charges.

The name of the suspect will not be released due to his age.

Nicole was in the eighth grade at Challenger Middle School in Colorado Springs. The school principal said Nicole was a very active student who would be greatly missed.
