COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Police say an explosive was found inside the same charred car that the remains of a person were found in early Tuesday morning.
Firefighters were called to the intersection of West Cimarron Street and Sahwatch Street after a fully-engulfed car was spotted in a gravel lot around 1 a.m. A couple of patrol officers happened to be in the area and responded to the fire as well. Heavy smoke shrouded the car and officers were unable to tell if anyone was inside. Once the smoke dissipated, the grisly discovery was made.
The deceased has not been identified, but police say the person was already dead when the fire was put out. They tell 11 News it appears he took his own life, though an autopsy is still pending.
Police said shortly before 9 a.m. that a suspicious-looking item had also been found in the vehicle. It was later confirmed to be some kind of improvised explosive.
