LEADVILLE, Colo. (KKTV) - National forest land in seven counties is now under stage two fire restrictions, effective immediately.
The restrictions are in effect in the Pike and San Isabel national forests in the following counties: Chaffee, Douglas, El Paso, Jefferson, Lake, Park and Teller. The following are now prohibited:
- Campfires, fire pits, charcoal, tiki torches and candles
- Smoking, except in an enclosed vehicle, building or trailer
- Discharging a firearm, air rifle or gas gun
Portable stoves, gas grills, and propane gas devices are still permitted on forest land.
The U.S. Forest Service said the restrictions were put in place due to the "very high to extreme" risk of human-caused fires. Two fires in less than a week, including the massive Spring Fire burning in Costilla and Huerfano counties, are confirmed to have been started by people.
