CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - An investigation is underway following a plane crash in Chaffee County Wednesday evening.
The sheriff's office was called to a field about a quarter of a mile north of Harriet Alexander Field, just west of Salida. When authorities arrived on scene they found a single engine Cessna 210 in the middle of a hay meadow. The pilot, 34-year-old Serena Welcher, had walked way from the crash and contacted emergency personnel.
Welcher was coming from Arizona and was planning to spend the night in Salida. She stated that on approach to the airport she experienced engine failure and lost power and set the plane down in the field, making contact with a center pivot sprinkler system causing moderate to severe damage to both the plane and the sprinkler system. Welcher was not hurt in the crash.
The NTSB is expected to start investigating the crash Thursday morning.
