4 bodies found in southeast Colorado Springs ruled a murder-suicide

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Neighbors are reeling after the deaths of two young children reportedly at the hands of their father.

"It just broke my heart, broke my heart because I've seen the children playing outside," said neighbor Clara Archuleta.

Police described the scene they found at the El Morro Mobile Estates as "horrific."

"We have one adult male, one adult female and two young children dead at the scene," CSPD Lt. Howard Black told 11 News.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office stated everyone died from gunshot wounds and that the manner of deaths have been ruled a murder-suicide. Rodolfo Barcenas Alcantara, 29, is suspected of shooting 26-year-old Lucero Badillo Castillo and their children, 8-year-old Rodolfo Barcenas Badillo Jr. and 5-year-old Laela Barcenas Badillo, then turning the gun in himself.

Black said officers were asked to do a welfare check at the family's home Tuesday night. Police found the bodies inside.

"These are the difficulties of being a police officer -- you see some of the most horrific events known to mankind, so it's very, very difficult, and especially when you have children involved," Black said.

"These children were little and they were fun to watch. They were outdoors playing ... they are innocent, they had no clue what was going on. They were just there with their parents, they’re little," Archuleta said.

District 11 confirms that the children are their students. Counselors will be at the school Thursday for anyone who needs them.
