EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - 11 News has learned the El Paso County Sheriff's Office is investigating another crime that happened in the same area where mountain biker, Timothy Watkins, was murdered.
Investigators tell 11 News they've gotten reports of a man threatening mountain bikers with a hatchet.
Both incidents happened over the weekend near mount Herman Road near Monument.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office would not say if they believe the crimes are related.
There are still many unanswered questions in the investigation into who killed Watkins. No arrest has been made.
It's an unsettling feeling for many.
"It's really sad because this has always been a very comfortable, relaxed community I've really enjoyed being around because I always felt safe. It's a little disconcerting right now,” resident Angela Gebeau said.
Although there are many unanswered questions, the sheriff's office says they don't want to scare people.
"Things have happened in that area that are a public safety concern but we also don't want to prohibit people from doing the activities they love and they actually come to Colorado for,” Jacqueline Kirby with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.
They're asking hikers and bikers to use the buddy system and be aware of their surroundings.
"If I do come across somebody who may not be in the best mood, my goal is to stay away and not be confrontation,” mountain biker Michael Gebeau said.
The sheriff's office says they don't have a suspect description of the man with the hatchet.
