VALDEZ, Colo. (KKTV) - A Valdez, Colorado man was shot and killed after allegedly attacking a deputy. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation identified the suspect killed on Thursday as 44-year-old Kristian Martinez.

Las Animas County deputies had responded to the 20500 block of Highway 12 just before 9 p.m. on Oct. 11 after neighbors saw a shed on fire in a backyard. When they got there, they encountered a man acting strangely at the home where the fire was burning. He abruptly ran away and reportedly lashed out at the deputy who chased after him. That man was identified as Martinez.

The sheriff's office says after the deputy was attacked, he shot Martinez. Martinez later died from his injuries. The CBI says it's believed Martinez was a relative of the homeowner where the structure fire occurred.

The deputy was placed on routine leave.
