5 homes destroyed in Elbert County fire; 80+ percent contained

KIOWA, Colo. (KKTV) - Five homes and four barns were destroyed in a fire burning southeast of the town of Kiowa Sunday, but there are no reports of lives lost.

The Elbert County Sheriff's Office says there were no injuries to any people, and despite how close the fire got to some livestock on the destroyed properties, there are no reports of livestock lost.

The fire burned about 375 acres and prompted evacuations.

The Elbert County Sheriff's Office says strong wind and dry conditions have allowed the fire to explode in size after sparking Sunday morning.

The fire is currently about 80-90 percent contained
