(KKTV) - My phone rings. The number looks familiar, and it says it's local. I weigh my options. Do I answer it? What if it's an emergency? Or it might be a maintenance worker who needs to come by our place. No, what if it's nothing more than a scam? Then I have to wiggle my way out of it. I let it roll to voicemail.
We've all been there, haven't we? We should always let it go to voicemail, but I know, sometimes we think about the "what ifs" and who might need us on the other end.
I'm taking over our 11 Call For Action team from Betty Sexton. Betty retired last week, and we will miss her dearly. She built our 11 Call For Action team into what it is today, and I know she has helped so many of you avoid being victims of crime.
I have been with KKTV for a little more than two years now, working as a reporter and fill-in anchor. My husband and I are both from Colorado; we both work here, live here and love it here. I attended Ponderosa High School in Parker. I'm a proud University of Colorado at Boulder alum. I feel so grateful that I get to report on stories in the community I care about so much.
I have learned so much from Betty during my time here. I have covered numerous Call For Action stories, trying to stay ahead of the latest scams that pop up. I have also done several investigative pieces, many of the topics coming from viewers.
Whenever I had a question about a difficult story I was working on, I knew I could turn to Betty for guidance. I know she has helped all of you through the years, as well. I hope I can do the same.
I'll give you my best advice first: If you get a call from a number you don't know, don't answer it. It saves us from having to decide whether the person on the other end of the line is telling the truth, from thinking of an excuse to hang up, and from potentially losing hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to a scam.
I look forward to chatting with you each week, sharing my advice and telling you about stories I'm working on. If you have a question for me, send me an email at email@example.com and remember the 11 Call for Action team of volunteers will still be right here for you at 719-457-8211.
