COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - It's hard to believe but the Internal Revenue Service or IRS says more than $1 billion is sitting and waiting to be claimed by one million American taxpayers.
Here in Colorado, I'm told a total of 20,200 people are due $19,454,000.
It averages out to about $700 for each of those 20,200 folks.
The reason? These 20,200 people never filed their 2013 federal tax return.
To collect their refunds, they must file their 2013 return by Tuesday, April 18th.
If they don't do it by then, the law says all that money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury.
And, I'm told some of those folks also could lose their earned income tax credit. In 2013, it was worth more than $6,000.
Bottom line, if you haven't filed the 2013 federal tax return, do it now and get the money you're due from the government.
