Former Avalanche player dies at 34

LONE TREE, Colo. (KKTV) Former Colorado Avalanche winger Marek Svatos has died, the team announced Sunday.

"The entire Avalanche organization is extremely saddened by this news. Marek was a tremendous person, a talented hockey player and a great teammate. Our thoughts, prayers and our deepest sympathy to his wife, children and his entire family," the team said in a statement obtained by sister station KCNC.

Svatos was living in Lone Tree at the time of his death.

The 34-year-old was drafted by the Avalanche in 2001 and spent most of his career with the Avalanche or their AFL affiliate, the Hershey Bears. He last played for NHL in the 2010-2011 season on the Ottawa Senators.

The cause of death has not been announced.
