COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A fire at a popular Colorado Springs park is under investigation after a pavilion became fully engulfed in flames early Friday morning.
Firefighters were dispatched to Bancroft Park in Old Colorado City around 3:15.
Firefighters called the damage severe. However, there were no injuries and firefighters managed to get the fire under control quickly.
"When you talk about an outdoor venue like this and the fact that there's no one around or activity going on this time of night, yeah, one of our first concerns is what did start this," said Steve Oswald with the Colorado Springs Fire Department. "Was it homeless people? Was it people trying to do damage?"
There are still many unanswered questions about the fire. Crews tell 11 News the stage isn't a total loss but it will take a lot of time and money to repair in time for community events once the weather starts to warm up.
"This is a historical area for Colorado Springs and having a venue like this damaged really is a sad thing to see," said Oswald. "Especially because Bancroft Park is used a lot in the summer for all kinds of great community activities."
While the exact cause remains under investigation, crews say it does not appear accidental.
