SWAT situation in King Soopers parking lot brought to peaceful end

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - Deputies and SWAT have brought a tense situation involving a suicidal person in a grocery store parking lot to a peaceful end.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office was called to the King Soopers on Constitution and Marksheffel just after noon Wednesday to check on a suicidal person in the store parking lot. When deputies got on scene, they found the man barricaded inside his car with multiple guns and called SWAT to assist. A spokesperson with the sheriff's office tells 11 News they would normally not call SWAT in this type of situation, but because of the potential risk to those coming and going from shops in the strip mall, SWAT responded as a precautionary measure.

The situation ended just after 1, nearly an hour after EPSO got the call. While it was ongoing, law enforcement worked to clear the parking lot to get people out of a potential line of fire. King Soopers and other stores in the strip mall went on lockdown.

A King Soopers employee tells 11 News that during the incident he saw law enforcement behind their vehicles with their guns drawn.

We are still waiting to learn more from the sheriff's office, but they have confirmed the man was taken into custody without anyone getting hurt.

We will be updating this story as more information becomes available.
