FARMINGTON, N.M. (KKTV) - New Mexico police were forced to shoot a Colorado man after he fell from a motel ceiling and charged at them with a knife.
A Farmington Police Department spokesperson said officers had entered a motel room early Tuesday morning and heard noises overhead. They began tearing out ceiling tiles and the suspect tumbled out.
Officers had previously been staged at the motel for more than an hour trying to get the suspect -- wanted on a warrant out of Ignacio, Colorado -- to surrender. His mother reportedly left the room during the standoff but the suspect ignored every attempt by police to make contact.
After he fell into the motel room, police say he ran at officers with his knife and was fatally shot.
The suspect has not been identified. Police say he had been facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
