COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A thief driving a distinct vehicle was caught on surveillance. Now, the victim is hoping someone will recognize the car.
The crime happened Monday around 5:20 a.m. in the Fairfax at Briargate neighborhood in northeast Colorado Springs.
In the video, the driver moves around the corner before turning off the headlights. Then, what's not caught on surveillance - the homeowner said he suspects the thief used a hacksaw to break the padlocks of his work truck tool boxes.
“What I thought was interesting is most of the time it’s kids or younger folks kind of just checking door handles and going down the street, but this one, if you watch the video, the way he takes the corner and pulls in behind my truck, it was planned,” said the victim.
The victim says he stole hundreds of dollars worth of tools.
“I’m still doing some math on it, but probably anywhere between $500 and $1500 or something in there. I’m still finding things that are missing. He took quite a few tools.”
The vehicle is described as an older Jeep Grand Cherokee with a luggage rack on the top and back, along with a red gas can on the luggage rack. It may have a white hood with a gray body.
The victim posted about the crime to his neighborhood apps, and now he thinks he's not the only one.
"I got a lot of responses from people who said I saw this guy trying to siphon gas out of my neighbor's truck, I scared him away. Another one said they saw him stealing from his son's truck, from the bed of the truck, so a lot of people have seen this vehicle around town."
If anyone recognizes the vehicle, call police at 719-444-7000 or remain anonymous through Crime Stoppers at 719-634-STOP.
