BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP/KKTV) - Authorities say two students were hurt in an accidental shooting during afternoon dismissal at a high school in Alabama's largest city. One of those students later died.
Students who said they saw the whole thing told CBS Birmingham that a boy was showing off a gun when it accidentally went off.
"She laid there and everyone was amazed and everybody shocked," a junior told the station. "He was shocked himself."
Those details have not been confirmed by police, though investigators are also calling it an accidental shooting. A 17-year-old girl was killed and a 17-year-old boy was critically injured.
A person of interest has been taken into custody.
The Birmingham City school system said in a statement that the shooting at Huffman High School prompted a brief lockdown and police were called. It says students were subsequently let go and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The school reportedly has metal detectors. Investigators would not comment on whether they were in use and how a gun would have slipped into the school.
Police are planning to review security footage.
