SCAM ALERT: Scammers spoofing FBI phone numbers

DENVER (KKTV) - A scam is using the FBI Denver Division's real telephone number to prey on victims.

The scammer claims the victims are being investigated by the FBI for violations and will be arrested if they don't pay a fee right away. The FBI says it does not call or e-mail private citizens to demand money or threaten arrest. The scammer is able to disguise their number to make it appear as if the FBI Denver Division is calling.

If you are contacted by these scammers, the FBI strongly recommends you contact the FBI Denver Division at 303-629-7171. Contact information for all of the FBI field offices can be found by clicking here.

There have been similar scams where callers have claimed to be with the IRS, DEA or another government agency.
