COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Twenty people were evacuated after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in west Colorado Springs late Saturday night.

More than two dozen firefighters responded to the fire that started on the backside of the building located on West Vermijo Street, near Highway 24 and South 8th Street.

“We heard banging on the door and we thought it may be a drunk person," said resident Anna Gonce. "Not on our door, but our neighbor's door. So we kind of ignored it. Then all of a sudden we smelled smoke."

No people or pets were injured, and the cause of the fire is still unknown.

The fire department advises everyone to make sure that their smoke alarms work. People should check and change out the batteries every six months.
