COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - One person is in critical condition after a shooting in a southeast Springs apartment complex late Thursday morning.

The victim, identified by his family as Dewandell Ricardo Smith, who goes by "Rico," is in his late 30s.

As of Thursday evening, police said Rico was in surgery and is expected to survive.

Police said Thursday they "contacted all involved parties" and are not looking for anyone else. On Friday, an arrest was announced. Alex Ruben Treviso, 33, was taken to the Criminal Justice Center for first-degree assault. His mugshot has not yet been released.

The shooting was reported nine minutes before noon at the El Vecino Apartments near South Circle and Monterey Road.

His family spoke with 11 News reporter Khloe Keeler. They said the incident started over a money issue gone wrong, but didn't know the details.

"Rico was a good person," said Rico's cousin, Shaundra Reed. "He would help anybody that he can help. He would go out of his way to take his shirt off his back and help anybody. He's a good person."

Reed continued, "My prayers go out to Rico. Hold your head up and I love you."

The victim's sister-in-law also spoke out.

"He was like the best big brother I ever had," said Laangela Patton. "I had a really close relationship to him. He's taken care of me even when he was in the services and overseas and at times when I needed him the most, he was there."

Anyone with information or is a witness to this investigation is asked to call the Colorado Springs Police Department at 719-444-7000.
