COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Challenger Middle School says it is grieving the loss of one of its students over the weekend.
"It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I share the news of the death of one of our students, Nicole Heitman. Nicole, an eighth grader, died after being involved in a tragic car accident Saturday night," Principal Tony Scott said in a letter to families. The letter was shared on the school's Facebook page.
Nicole, just 13, was killed after the SUV she was in flipped on Powers Boulevard north of Woodmen Road. Nicole was one of four teens in the vehicle and was ejected during the rollover.
The other three occupants were transported to a nearby hospital to get their injuries treated.
Neither alcohol nor drugs were considered factors in this crash. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
Scott called Nicole a "very involved" student who would be "greatly missed."
The school had additional counselors on campus Tuesday to help students deal with their grief.
A memorial for Nicole will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Angelus Chapel on 1104 S. Circle Dr.
The crash that killed Nicole was the fourth traffic-related fatality in Colorado Springs for 2018. At this time last year, there were no traffic-related fatalities.
