Montrose County authorities say a hunter was fatally shot in the head when his companion accidentally dropped his rifle and it discharged.
The Montrose Daily Press reports that Coroner Thomas Canfield ruled the death an accident. Undersheriff Kevin Walters said no charges were planned.
Authorities identified the victim as 56-year-old James Ayer. They didn't release the name of his hunting companion.
Walters says the accident occurred Tuesday on Ayer's property. Walters says the other hunter lost his balance and fell backward, and the .243-caliber rifle discharged when it hit the ground.
