Anyone who has ever watched a disaster—natural or human-made—unfold on the news has probably wondered how they would handle a similar situation. The city of Colorado Springs and the Colorado Citizen Corps have teamed up to help local residents learn how to hold their own in unexpected disasters.
On January 22 and 23, people can attend a free Citizen Emergency Response Training class. The Colorado Springs Office of Emergency Management says the class will provide training in disaster preparedness and response, using classroom learning and hands-on training to educate students in becoming self-sufficient in the first 72 hours following any kind of disaster. Topics to be discussed include:
• disaster preparedness
• disaster medical assistance
• light search and rescue
• fire safety
• terrorism and disaster psychology
The class will not offer CPR or first aid certification.
