Some holiday shopping for local students was also a lesson Monday. Some disabled students, or students in transition, from Widefield School District picked up some life skills while getting presents for family and friends for the holiday.
With a list in hand Garfield Gerholdt searched for gifts for his family.
As he cruised the isles of KMart, he hit a roadblock.
"I don't think we have that in stock," says a KMart associate.
But he was more successful in the toy section. "It's perfect for my mom's Christmas present," says Gerholdt.
Then, it was on to the hunt for some sweet treats. "I have to do is get to the candy section," says Gerholdt. And we struck gold. "Ah! That must be it," says Gerholdt.
"It's a big learning experience they shop by themselves and we help them purchase their gifts and they pay for their gifts by themselves," says Bobbi Harris of the Widefield School District.
This shopping trip is as much of a treat for the KMart staff as it is for the students. "Our store staff really gets excited about it they like to help out and lend a hand and these 10 kids that we are helping here today you know i think it will mean a lot to them," says Chuck Winslow, manager of KMart.
After all the holiday shopping was done, the KMart staff volunteered time to wrap all the presents.
The group of students in transition range in age from 18 to 21-years-old. It's through events like this that they get to go out in the community to learn life skills.
