"They" are the 2009 Silver Bell Award Nominees for Volunteer-of-the-Year.

The Assistance League of Colorado Springs has presented the award annually since 1972. The organization accepts nominations of individuals from philanthropic organizations. A panel of community judges considers the nominations in a blind judging process.

This year's program culminated in the announcement of the Silver Bell Award winner Thursday. It is Don Haller, who volunteers for the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Auxiliary.

Haller volunteers by conducting tours for school groups, handling animals, and doing interpretive education at the zoo.

Haller was chosen from among 7 nominees. The list includes: Dave O'Keefe, with Ecumenical Social Ministries; Darlene Larson, with Memorial Health System Auxiliary; Nadine Sage, with Safe Place; Mike Smith, with Colorado Springs Therapeutic Recreation Program; Eddie Three Eagles, with One Nation Walking Together; and Joyce Toenjes, with the Urban League.

The award presentation was made during an event at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort.

KKTV 11 News Anchor Shannon Brinias served as one of the community judges.
