Why The Video Looks Shaky (Don Ward)
Updated: 06/18/2013 - We did a quick helicopter tour of the Black Forest burn area. Someone asked why the video looks shaky.
It is not business as usual at Springs Transmissions and Automotive.
Owner Greg Ehnes tells me from 3:30 Tuesday afternoon until 11 Wednesday morning the doors were locked and no one was on the premises here near Platte and Chelton. He says it's because he's ill.
But sources tell me Ehnes is selling as much of his equipment as possible.
Sources also say that he told them he's leaving town and getting out of the business.
Ehnes told me Wednesday night that he's hauled off a lot of old equipment and even sold items like lifts because it's something he needs to do. In case he does sell, his shop's ready for the new owner.
All that in a flurry of police activity. First, a search warrant served by Springs police and allegations that he's ripped off anywhere from 22 to 50 customers.
Then charges by Fountain police of conspiracy and false reporting to authorities.
And later allegations that a former employee took several customers' cars and sold them for scrap metal.
We started our investigation early this year when customers told us Springs Transmissions promised to fix their cars, but ended up holding them for months, refusing to give them back unless they paid cash.
We also learned Ehnes was advertising that his business had an a plus rating with the BBB when he really had an F. I asked him about it back in April.
"So don't you think that's a little misleading to tell people you have an a rating when you have an F?"
Greg replies, "I'd say that's misleading."
While we were there Tuesday a couple of customers came by and were surprised to find it closed.
Among them a man who owns this Corvette.
He was upset his car was left sitting unlocked and unprotected in the parking lot when he thought it was being repaired.
I talked to Greg Ehnes on the phone Wednesday. He tells me the only reason the shop's been closed is because he's ill. He says mechanics will be there periodically working on cars even though he's not around.
He does admit he's weighing his options right now and hasn't decided whether to close, to sell the shop, or stay open.
Springs police tell me if you have a car at Springs Transmissions and Automotive you might want to consider hiring an attorney.
Financial Crimes detectives are actively working the case among themselves and with the district attorney's office. They describe it as a very complicated case. We'll be sure to keep you in the loop, as we have all along.
