The next time your phone rings, beware: a new scam is circulating in Colorado Springs and El Paso County.
A crook is pretending to be from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, claiming you didn't show up for jury duty and now you have to pay--or get arrested.
11 News talked to a local grandmother who says she almost believed it.
On Tuesday morning, this local woman got a phone call she'll never forget. The caller on the other line claimed to be a lieutenant with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. He said she didn't show up for jury duty.
“He said there's a warrant out for your arrest, so that got my attention,” the grandma explained. She didn't want us to use her name or show her face on camera.
The scam artist said she had one hour to pay the $850 fine. Her heart was racing, but she felt something wasn't right.
“I was so worried about going to jail, but I said, 'I'm not going to do anything until I get my son-in-law.'"
After contacting her son-in-law, they figured out this was a scam and called police.
"I've listened to those stories and made myself aware, and yet I still fell for it. I don't want anybody to fall for this."
The caller told the grandma to go to a 7-Eleven or Walgreens to put the cash on a green dot money card. It's just like a gift card. He was then going to meet her at the store or at the courthouse.
It's important to note that a jury summons only comes in the mail. If you miss jury duty, you will get a letter in the mail. No one will ever call and demand that you pay them.
