Honda Announces Global Airbag Recall

Honda is recalling 304,000 vehicles around the world for an airbag defect.

Honda says the airbags may inflate with too much pressure in a crash, sending metal and plastic pieces flying. Honda says at least 20 accident can be traced to the malfunction, including two deaths in the U.S. in 2009.

The majority of the vehicles--273,000--are being recalled from the U.S. About 27,000 in Canada, almost 2,000 in Japan, and 2,000 spread throughout other countries are also being recalled.

The recall was announced Friday, which affects certain 2001 and 2002 Accord; 2001 to 2003 Civic and Odyssey; 2002 and 2003 CR-V and Acura 3.2 TL; and 2003 Pilot, and Acura 3.2 CL vehicles.

Honda recalled has recalled vehicles over the last three years for the same issue; Honda says 2 million vehicles worldwide have now been recalled since 2008. Several models have been affected.

Honda spokesman Hajime Kaneko said the cause for the latest recall was the use of incorrect material in the chemical used to deploy air bags.

The initial cause of the recall was excessive moisture in the inflator propellant, which is part of what inflates the air bag.

But that problem was found later to affect more vehicles than initially estimated, as incidents didn't stop, and the recall was expanded to account for the possibility that the problem was caused by a defective stamping machine used during production, he said.

Honda is extremely sorry about the recalls but believes the problem has now been taken care of, with no more recalls linked to this problem expected, he said.

Also included in the latest recall are 912 air-bag service parts sold for installation in vehicles for collision repair and other reasons, Honda said.
