General Motors says it will buy back any Chevy Volt from customers concerned about the electric car's safety.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation after finding two volt batteries caught fire one to three weeks after crashes. The crashes occurred after side-impact crash tests conducted by federal regulators.

GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson said that he believes the cars are safe, but that the company and federal safety regulators are working to determine what caused the fires.
