Call For Action Special: The House Doctors

This Briargate man says a roofer going door to door offered to inspect his roof for hail damage. He never knew that visit would later lead to a lawsuit.

Jerry Hatley says, "Initially I thought it was just a letter of intent."

Jerry says a rep with the Denver company, The House Doctors asked him to sign a couple of documents which he did... without reading through them.

Jerry later learned those papers were a contract.

So when Jerry decided not to hire the company he was served with papers.

Jerry was told he owed The Roof Doctors a claim service fee of $1,500 plus court costs and fees.

He says, "I just got blindsided in all of this."

Eugenia Carpenter says the same thing happened to her.
She tells us, "They did not do anything!"

Eugenia says The House Doctors rep climbed on her roof... told her she had hail damage and asked her to sign a few papers giving him permission to speak to her insurance company.

She never read what she signed.

Eugenia warns, "I have very good lesson in my life. Never ever I will sign anything in my life."

Eugenia, who emigrated here from Russia says she was going through a tough time because her husband was ill.

Donald Carpenter wound up in the hospital for three months and then passed away in March.

Now... Eugenia says she's being asked to pay a claim service fee of more than $2,100.

We called The House Doctors and a woman named Disa McAlister called back from Arizona.

She says the company only sues those who fail to live up to their contracts.

She refused to answer questions about Jerry's or Eugenia's lawsuits.
She also couldn't explain why her attorney wouldn't return my calls and failed to show up in court last week for Jerry's case. Now it won't be heard till June.

McAlister told me The House Doctors uses a partner called No Limit Remodeling and Repair to install 500 roofs a year in Arizona and Colorado.

But when I called No Limit's owner... he told me he only works in Arizona, not Colorado.

The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department which regulates building code and licenses contractors in El Paso County and Colorado Springs tells me... neither company is licensed to do business here.

In fact... the department has tried to serve The House Doctors with court papers... telling them to stop doing business here without a license, but the department's attorney hasn't been able to track down its' operators.

Tim Abello, a licensed, professional roofer who is owner of Abello's Roofing warns, "When a person comes and knocks on your door and wants you to sign something just for them to look at your roof... run, run as fast as you can because normally that's either going to be a storm chaser or someone that's not from the Springs."

Abello stepped in and helped others ripped off by a different roofing company we told you about last Fall.

He says his workers never ask for anything signed upfront because they don't believe in locking in customers.

Remember, before you hire a company check it out first. The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department's website will tell you if a contractor is licensed to do business here and whether he or she has liability insurance.
That protects you if a worker's injured on your property.

You can also call Pikes Peak Regional Building and get the same information over the phone.

Pikes Peak Regional Building Department wants to know if you've had a problem with a contractor. They encourage you to call if you run into trouble or just have a question about a contractor.

Bottom line never, ever sign anything upfront unless you've read it and understand it.

The House Doctors seems to operate under a couple of different names.

These are the ones we found: Hail Heroes, Awesome Exteriors, No Limit Remodeling and Repair, and MHM Consulting, LLC.

The latest name, MHM Consulting was added just last week to the Colorado Secretary of State's Office website after our calls to The House Doctors' attorney.

On a side note, there is a company called "The House Doctor" in Colorado Springs.

It's owned by John Byers.
Byers is a general contractor with an A-1 license and is in no way connected to "The House Doctors."
