Beware of Bogus Text Messages

She got the first text message about her credit card on Sunday. At first, Lin Brock was alarmed and who wouldn't be.

The message... her card was closed and she need to call a California number right away.

Lin says, "I thought Jiminy Christmas! Something's wrong with my bank account."

The next message came Tuesday. This time the text claimed to be from Wells Fargo... warning about her Cricket cell phone account. Lin says she is a cricket customer... But not one with Wells Fargo.

She checked her bank after both calls and learned all's well.

Lin says, "The guy that answered the phone. He pulled up my account and says, no, your account's fine."

When I called the numbers, one had been disconnected, but the other had a message, from the FTC, Federal Trade Commission.

It's a new tactic Uncle Sam's using to make sure you don't get ripped off.

Instead of leaving you hanging... in some cases the FTC is now leaving a warning message on the numbers used by crooks telling you ... don't respond.

Lin says "Ignore it, because it's bogus!"

Lin's right. Remember, crooks are using every avenue to get cash.... whether they be phone calls, text messages, emails, letters, or special deliveries.

Don't click on links and don't reply to numbers listed. Check them out on your own by calling your bank or credit card company.

And remember area codes are misleading. Calls can be forwarded even if they appear to originate in the U.S.

If you have any questions... Give our 11Call for Action Team a call. We'll be happy to check it out.

"Gee many Christmas?" I think you mean "Jiminy Christmas." It's a minced oath. Cheers!
