BBB Warns Seniors: You May Be Targeted In New Scam

Senior citizens traditionally have some degree of protection when it comes to many scams, due to lack of transportation. The Better Business Bureau is warning those in that demographic to watch out: a group of scammers out of Jamaica are going out of their way to ensure that senior citizens can be included too.

Most of this latest scam still follows the traditional outline: a consumer gets a phone call from Jamaica (area code 876), offering huge sums of money to the consumer if they wire a “processing fee” to the caller. Victims are actually giving the scammers money, and never receive anything in return.

Wiring money typically requires a trip to the bank, then a separate trip to wire the money. The inability for many seniors to find reliable transportation to carry out these steps has allowed that segment of the population to dodge most scams.

Now, according to the BBB, the Jamaican scammers have found a loophole: teaming up with taxi companies to arrange pick-up arrangements for their victims. This new twist to an otherwise common scam has put seniors in danger of being targeted too.

The BBB says that there is no evidence that any cab companies or their employees are privy to the scam, but that many, including the Yellow Cab Company of Colorado Springs, have been made aware that they could be contacted.
