Baby Sling Warning

The U.S. government is preparing a safety warning about baby slings -- those popular and fashionable infant carriers that parents can sling around their chests to carry their baby.

The concern is that infants can suffocate, and a few have.

Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Inez Tenenbaum says her agency is getting ready to issue a general warning to the public, likely to go out this week, about the baby carriers.

She did not single out any specific slings or discuss at least seven reported deaths linked to them.

Safety advocates have cautioned that some slings, where the baby falls into a curved or "C-like" position inside the sling, can lead to suffocation by restricting the baby's breathing.

The sling is wonderful. I would have wanted to try one when my children were infants but, they weren't popular then. I'm sorry for saying so but, this is just one more example of a Mother not paying attention to her child. I realize that accidental deaths happen but, how in the world could you be so preoccupied that your baby literally dies in your arms. Not the fault of the sling. Just my opinion.

I used a variety of different types of slings with my two kids. I never had any trouble with them at all. I really loved my slings, I hope that this doesn't scare parents out of trying them. Read the directions! And if your sling doesn't come with directions look up how to use it on the internet. There are plenty of sites with step by step directions on proper use of these things.

Oh please Jen.. such generalities. Look at the facts listed. Hundreds of thousands of women have used slings without problems. I used one and raised 3 healthy children. There are plenty of them that are safe and this article does not say otherwise. So let's not run around like headless chickens and insinuate by your statement that mothers who have and are using them, are placing their children in unsafe situations.

This is why I never used them. Just by looking at them you could tell that it wasn't safe for the baby. I'm glad I listened to my instincts!
