Sex Offender Warnings Worry Residents

A company is leaving an attention-grabbing note taped to the front doors of many. It's a warning about a sex offender in your area, but we learned it's just a clever marketing ploy.

Many Springs residents have received this notice. They're definitely designed to make you visit the company's Web site, Neighborhood Red Alert.

When we called the company this is the recorded voice message:

"Hello, this is Gordon with Neighborhood Red Alert. As a 72 year old father of 9 and grandfather of ten...."

Gordon's message goes on to say he's tired of sex offenders living among us and his chief concern is protecting our children.

I tried to reach Gordon, but so far haven't heard back. His address is this post office box on North Academy in the Village Seven area.

The notes have prompted the El Paso County Sheriff's Office as well as the Colorado Springs, Fountain, and Broomfield police departments to get involved. They're telling residents not to be frightened. They're concerned because the notes have elevated the number of 911 calls.

The bottom line is you don't have to pay a company nearly $5 a month to find out where registered sex offenders live.

The information is free from several sources. One of them is the Springs Police Department.

The Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado says the company's not doing anything illegal, but its' advertising is a little misleading.

"To charge a fee for something that citizens can get for free is almost like charging someone to vote," said Katie Carrol with the BBB. "You can vote for free."

Again, the company is not operating illegally. It claims to continually update information every month and even offers their services free to school principals and day care operators.

But, if you want to know how close sex offenders are to you, you can head to other websites and find out for free.
