Crooks are using your cell phone to try and scam you. They're leaving text or voice mail messages claiming there's been unusual activity on your credit card.
Their goal... to make you react by inputting your 16-digit account number.
But don't buy it.
They're impersonating Air Academy Federal Credit Union again.
Here's a clip of their recording... "Welcome to Air Academy Federal Credit Union Security Department. Please follow the next steps to verify your account information..."
Peter Shanahan got the message, similar to one he received back in March and knew it wasn't legit.
Shanahan says, "I don't have a bank account with them. I ain't going to let that happen to me."
Air Academy Federal Credit Union is again being flooded with calls. A spokeswoman says they're telling everyone to ignore the bogus message.
But if you've already responded.. notify the bank and police right away.
A detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit tells me hundreds of folks in southern Colorado got a text or voicemail message last March. Those who responded had their accounts compromised within minutes... with the credit union taking the loss.
I'm told the calls were traced to eastern Europe.
Customers' credit card numbers were reportedly being used for purchases in New York as well as Germany and Romania.
The reported loss... more than $20,000.
The crooks are reportedly very sophisticated, high tech experts.
Just remember banks and credit unions won't contact you like this. If you have any questions... call your credit card company yourself. Don't respond to this kind of vague message
