Colorado Springs Utilities Budget Billing Plan

Fourteen-thousand Colorado Springs Utilities customers never worry about their bills going through the roof.
They're on the budget billing plan. That means they pay Colorado Springs Utilities the same amount every month no matter how cold or hot it is... or what their thermostat setting.
Fran Porter, one of our Call for Action volunteers says, "It's so easy. You call and they tell you on the phone."
Porter says the program's great for folks like her on a fixed income. She knows her monthly bill will be 117-dollars, not a penny more.
Every customer's monthly amount is different. It's all based on usage.
And, at the end of twelve months Springs Utilities checks to see exactly how much energy was used.
Karen Walker with Colorado Springs Utilities adds, "If we owe the customer money we could either put that credit in the next 12 months or we're happy to refund it back to them."
For those who need help paying their bills Uncle Sam and the state have a program called LEAP which has strict income guidelines.
And more than 25-hundred Colorado Springs Utilities customers get aid every year through PROJECT COPE. With that plan up to 500-dollars is available on a one time basis only for those who've gotten a disconnect notice.

    I have a situation where my electricity was already cut-off and they have told me through LEAP that my electricity is not my main source to keep my apartment warm. Problem is, I have been without electricity for 4 days already and food is probably bad, no heat whatsoever to stay warm, water is ice cold, cannot take breathing medication, and mother's insulin is going bad. I am unemployed and they are demanding $272 to be paid before I can have my elctric back on. Temperatures are going to drop even more and I don't understand how LEAP can say that the gas that's paid through my rent is the main source for heat when you need electricity to have the heat flow in a home. I have run out of options and 211 basically told me that I have to freeze as there are no other sources that can help me. Colorado Springs Utilities has declined every avenue to help me and I am freezing. the temperature is about to drop even more and I am out of options. I have filed for UI and it's pending. Help!
