A new scam in Colorado Springs involves crooks making phone calls, trying to steal your money by claiming to be a local utility company.
A Springs business owner says she was nearly a victim of the scam. She got a call from someone claiming to be from Colorado Springs Utilities. The caller said that her payment was never processed, and she was asked to give the caller her credit card information.
The woman became suspicious, however, because of the type of information they said they needed. She did not give away any of her account numbers. CSU confirmed her suspicions, and said in a collections situation none of its workers would ever ask for banking information over the phone.
"If it's an unsolicited call and someone is trying to get your credit card information or social security or any kind of personal information [the customer] should not feel obligated,” said CSU spokesperson Steve Berry. “In fact, they should probably hang up the phone."
If a utility payment is delinquent, CSU said there are a few steps that will be taken to get the payment from the customer. The steps include sending out letters, placing door hangers at the home or business, and phone calls. Again, CSU will not ask for your credit or debit card numbers during those calls.
