Scammers who claim to be with the IRS are once again going after people in Southern Colorado.
It just happened to one Colorado Springs man.
Allan Van Hine says he got a call Wednesday morning, but he didn't answer it. Instead, the caller left a threatening message on his answering machine. The person claimed to be with the IRS and said if Van Hine didn't call back within 12 hours there would be a warrant issued for his arrest.
"I would suspect that it was just checking anybody they could reach. It was probably robo-calling. Maybe they go after seniors, thinking they are trusting or that they can scare them," said Van Hine.
Part of the reason Van Hine says he didn't fall for it is because he knows that IRS employees will never call and threaten you.
If you owe money or there is some kind of issue, the IRS will send you a letter in the mail.
If you do get a suspicious call, ask for the caller's name and phone number, and their badge number.
To check with the IRS directly to see if you owe taxes or if there is actually some kind of an issue, call 1-800-829-1040.
