A local mom is warning everyone about a new scam going around in Southern Colorado.

The caller claimed to be with Comcast's Promotions Department, and said they wanted to reward the woman for being a loyal customer.

The mom, who didn't want us to use her name, says the caller is very convincing.

The caller said all she had to do was pay all of her payments for the year up front, and she would get a substantial discount.

The scammer asked her put the money on a Green Dot card, which is like a prepaid debit card, and then read them the numbers over the phone.

The mom tells 11 News she thought it was real, so she got the cash out and went to a store to buy one of the cards.

An employee at the store actually stopped her, and said it sounded suspicious and she shouldn't do it.

A spokesperson with Comcast says they are aware of the scam. She tells 11 News even though the company does offer various promotions, they do not offer discounts for paying for the services in advance.

The spokesperson also says Comcast does accept the Green Dot card as a valid form of payment, but it is not required. Customers can also pay with cash, checks or credit cards.

If you are contacted by a scammer, report it to the Comcast Security Assurance team. You can call them at 1-888-565-4329 or email abuse@comcast.net.

And before you agree to anything, call the company to verify the promotion. Make sure to call the number on your statement, not just the number the caller gives you over the phone.
