Hurricane Force Wind, Fire Danger and Snow...gotta love it.

This last weekend was an interesting one.  We had highs in the 80s and 90s with gusty wind on Saturday.  In fact Colorado Springs set a new record with a high of 80, besting the old record by seven degrees!  Pueblo hit 87 and beat the old record by 4 degrees.  Well, this was just the beginning of it all...  Late Saturday night, a strong chinook event unfolded with wind gusts over 80 mph in many places.  The west side of Colorado Springs had gusts over 80 mph with lots of tree and power line damge.  While this was occurring, temperatures in the middle of the night were still in the 60s and 70s.  I walked outside to check things out at 2am, and you didn't even need a jacket.  One of the few times when a Red Flag Warning remained in effect for the entire night.  Pretty crazy...

Sunday was the transition day.  A strong cold front plowed through Southern Colorado early in the afternoon.  Impressive wind gusts accompanied the front, with gusts over 60 mph.  Temperatures dropped some 30 degrees behind the front, and snow showers developed.  While Colorado Springs and Pueblo just saw a dusting, areas to the south and southwest of Pueblo picked up 6 to 12 inches of snow.  Great moisture!  Just not nearly widespread enough...

That's what this time of year can do.  Expect the unexpected is what Branden and I always say.  April 26, 2007 offerred a blizzard in Rush and a quarter mile wide tornado 40 miles to the east in Lincoln County.  You only have to see something like that once, to never let your guard down on how drastic the change can be this time of year.
