January 21, 2010: White Gold (Brian Bledsoe)

The recent storm that is hammering California, Arizona and Utah, is going to hammer Colorado's southwest mountains.  Several feet of snow will get dumped in the San Juan Mountains with lesser totals for the mountains south of I-70.  The resorts in Summit County are going to get shorted by this storm, as most of the good moisture will get wrung out in the southwest part of the state.

Notice how meager the mid mountain depth is for many of the northern resorts.  Arapahoe Basin jumps right off the page, with a 26" depth and much of their blue runs not even open.  Only 6% of their black runs are open!  When Powderhorn has deeper base than Copper Mountain, Aspen, and Steamboat, you know something's up.  Meanwhile, Wolf Creek, Telluride, Crested Butte, and Purgatory are having boom years.  Plus, it's only going to get better...

Like I've been talking about for quite some time, El Nino energizes the southern storm track and produces more frequent storms for our southern resorts.  Northern resorts are a bit too far north to get in on the really juicy storms.  We need more of a westerly or northwesterly flow to get them in on the act.  Unfortunately, that doesn't look like it will happen for a while.  So, if you want some great skiing and you don't mind driving a little bit, head to the southern part of the state.
