A tornado-producing supercell thunderstorm tracked across eastern Elbert, Lincoln, and southwest Cheyenne Counties during the late afternoon on Wednesday.  All told, there were a total of 9 tornado reports from law enforcement and trained weather spotters.  Now, this doesn't mean this storm spawned 9 individual tornadoes.  In fact, it is quite likely many of the reports are of the same tornado.  We'll have a much better idea as to exactly how many tornadoes there were, once a damage assessment team from the National Weather Service completes their analysis of the event (within a couple of days).  They will also provide a rating or ratings for the tornado/es based on their assessment of the damage.  Speaking of which, here's a rundown of the damage that was reported to the National Weather Service in Boulder:

3 feet of water over HWY 71

Power poles knocked over and one power pole snapped

Pea-size hail covering ground to depth of 4 inches

Van trailer overturned and large branches from trees snapped.  Roof torn off shed.  2 foot hail drifts.

Tree fell into house and power lines down

Damage to power pole, tree, and house

It's hard to say for sure whether or not all of this damage was caused by a tornado.  It is quite possible some of this damage occurred from straight-line winds.  This too, will be cleared up after the damage assessment team releases their findings.  Be sure to check our weather blog in the next couple of days...as soon as we find out what they learned, we'll let you know.
