2012 MLB Predictions (Sam Farnsworth)

The Marlins new stadium won't win them games. The Rockies will fall victim to the injury bug and will fall short. And the Nationals will be wearing Cinderella's cleats. Click this story for Sam Farnsworth's 2012 MLB predictions including a World Series winner.

It’s here! It’s here! It’s finally here!

I mean, come on! Who doesn’t get excited about Opening Day?!?!
The new look, new name Miami Marlins kicked off the Major League Baseball season with a lot of pomp and circumstance. I must admit, the new stadium does look pretty sweet! Whose idea was it to put a fish tank behind home plate? GENIUS!
And that green wall in the outfield could easily double for the chroma-wall a weatherman uses to do the local forecast on the evening news. Why not?
But let’s be honest here.  It’s the MARLINS! A franchise that is making one big-time, last ditch effort to prevent the team from failing in Florida. Since 2001 only once have the Marlins ranked higher than 28th out of 30 MLB teams in attendance. That was in 2004 and they still only reached 26th. In fact, in the World Series winning year of 2003 the Marlins average attendance was just over 16,000 fans.
Sure the stadium sold out on Opening Night, but they didn’t give fans much of a reason to return. That’s why I am picking the Marlins to finish fourth in the N.L. East and miss the playoffs. They won’t average more than 20,000 fans per game this season in their new house.
That leads me to the rest of the 2012 MLB predictions.
Below you will find where I think each team will place in their respective divisions as well as which teams will make the playoffs. Sorry Rockies fans. This season will end without a playoff bid once again. The Rockies have the talent to contend for a Division title again, but once again I am betting on the injury bug stealing serious playing time from Carlos Gonzalez and Todd Helton. Add that on top of a sketchy pitching rotation and the Rockies will limp to the finish line in 2012.
So without further delay, here are my picks for the 2012 season:
AL East
1.       New York Yankees
2.       Tampa Bay Rays
3.       Boston Red Sox
4.       Toronto Blue Jays
5.       Baltimore Orioles
AL Central
1.       Detroit Tigers
2.       Minnesota Twins
3.       Kansas City Royals
4.       Chicago White Sox
5.       Cleveland Indians
AL West
1.       Texas Rangers
2.       Los Angeles Angels
3.       Oakland Athletics
4.       Seattle Mariners
The American League wildcard spots will go to the Tampa Bay Rays and the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels will win the one game playoff and will face the Tigers in the ALDS with the Rangers and Yankees going head-to-head in the other Divisional Series. Rangers and Tigers will win the ALDS. Tigers will win the ALCS. See below for World Series prediction.
NL East
1.       Philadelphia Phillies
2.       Washington Nationals
3.       Atlanta Braves
4.       Miami Marlins
5.       New York Mets
NL Central
1.       Milwaukee Brewers
2.       St. Louis Cardinals
3.       Cincinnati Reds
4.       Chicago Cubs
5.       Pittsburgh Pirates
6.       Houston Astros
NL West
1.       Arizona Diamondbacks
2.       San Francisco Giants
3.       Colorado Rockies
4.       Los Angeles Dodgers
5.       San Diego Padres
The National League Wildcard spots will go to the St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Nationals. The Nats are my “Cinderella” pick for 2012. The Cards will win the one-game playoff and will face the Brewers in the NLDS with the Diamondbacks and Phillies going head-to-head in the other Divisional Series. St. Louis and Arizona will win in the NLDS and will play each other in the NLCS. St. Louis will win the NLCS and return to the World Series.
WORLD SERIES PREDICTION: The Detroit Tigers will defeat the St. Louis Cardinals to win the 2012 World Series in five games. Justin Verlander, winner of games one and five, will be the World Series MVP.
